What is AndroGel?

Manufactured by Abbott Laboratories spinoff Abbvie, Inc., AndroGel is used for replacement therapy in males with low or non-existent testosterone levels. AndroGel is available in two strengths, 1% (approved in 2000) and 1.62% (approved in 2011). The product is applied topically, and has had its label changed a number of times since first entering the market.

Testosterone Supplements Linked to Cardiovascular Complications

Over the past several years, the testosterone replacement market has become more profitable than ever, with annual sales of nearly $2 billion in the U.S. alone. The industry is expected to reach $5 billion by 2017, due in large part to aggressive direct-to-consumer ad campaigns that push AndroGel and other similar products on men of a certain age.

When men reach the age of about 30, their naturally-occurring testosterone levels start to decline, and many turn to ‘Low T’ products for help. However, a recent study in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) determined that males who use testosterone supplements are 29% more likely to have a stroke or other cardiovascular complications compared to non-testosterone users.

AndroGel Side Effects

Researchers in the JAMA study found a link between testosterone and the following side effects:

  • Stroke – When brain cells suddenly die due to lack of oxygen.
  • Pulmonary embolism – Sudden blockage of an artery leading to the lungs. Pulmonary embolisms are usually caused by a blood clot that travels to the lung from a leg vein.
  • Heart Attack (Myocardial infarction) – Occurs when blood is unable to flow properly to part of the heart.
  • Arrhythmia – Irregular heartbeat
  • Transient ischemic attacks (‘mini-stroke’) – Transient episode of neurologic dysfunction caused by ischemia (loss of blood flow).

The side effects of AndroGel can cause a tremendous amount of hardship, both for the user as well as his family. The medical expenses associated with AndroGel complications can be staggering, and can put the family’s financial future in jeopardy. This is why you may wish to consider legal action if you’ve been injured by AndroGel.

About AndroGel Class Action Lawsuits

Although we are a nationally recognized class action firm, the Products Liability Litigation Group at our law firm has decided against the filing of an AndroGel Class Action Suit, and is currently filing individual claims on behalf of individuals and/or their family members who have been injured after using AndroGel.

A class action is a type of lawsuit filed with the court on behalf of large group of people or “class” of individuals that have been injured or wronged. The class is represented by the law firm and the case is generally decided upon a single member of the class who is sometimes referred to as the “class representative or class rep.”

Why Our Law Firm Is Filing Individual Lawsuits Opposed To a Class Action

In some instances, a class action may offer some advantages, as they aggregate a large number of individualized claims into one representational lawsuit. The aggregation can increase the efficiency of the legal process, lower the costs of litigation and in some cases offer the solution to a common problem wherein small recoveries do not provide the incentive for any individual or law firm to file an individual lawsuit.

However, a class action suit can also be a detriment to many class members, as they are often forced into a blanket “low ball settlement” and higher attorney fees. At Schmidt & Clark, LLP we understand that our clients are suffering emotionally and economically due to loss of wages and/or high medical bills and we plan to maximize each client’s recovery by filing individual AndroGel Lawsuits on their behalf.
